What should you ask before you hire a tree service?
By Andy's PGM ·

Before you hire anyone to work on your trees, it’s worth asking a few questions. A reputable company will be glad to answer them.
1. Are you licensed and insured?
This is the big one. If an uninsured crew drops a limb on your roof, or someone gets hurt in your yard, you could end up dealing with it. Ask for proof of insurance, and don’t be shy about it.
2. How long have you been doing this?
Experience matters in tree work. Every tree is a little different, and there’s no substitute for having seen a lot of them. Andy’s PGM has been in business since September 23, 1988.
3. What does cleanup include?
Ask exactly what will be left when the crew pulls out. Will they haul the wood? The brush? Rake the lawn? Clear the roof? Some companies cut the tree and leave the rest for you.
Andy’s answer: “Our claim to fame is we always clean up well. I don’t like leaving stuff for the customer to have to do.”
4. What equipment will you use?
Big trees near houses need the right equipment: bucket trucks, loaders, sometimes a crane. Ask how they plan to take your tree down and what they’ll bring to do it.
5. What happens if there’s a nest in the tree?
A good crew looks for nests and animals before they cut, and works around them. See how we handle it.
6. Are you local?
A company that lives where it works has a reputation to protect. As Andy puts it: “I gotta see my customers in the grocery store.”
7. Is the estimate free, and is the price clear?
You should know what you’re paying for before work starts: what’s being cut, what’s being hauled, and whether stump grinding is included.
